DMOZ (The Open Directory Project) is closing

DMOZ (Open Directory Project)

As of Mar 14, 2017 will no longer be available.

The Open Directory Project that uses human editors to organize websites is closing. The announcement came via a notice that’s now showing on the Homepage of the site. Saying it will close as of March 14, 2017.

DMOZ(The Open Directory Project) was born in June 1998 as GnuHoo, then quickly changed to NewHoo. A rival to the Yahoo Directory at the time.

It was soon acquired by Netscape in November 1998 and renamed the Netscape Open Directory. Later that month, AOL acquired Netscape, giving AOL control of The Open Directory.

It is sad to part with D M O Z – The Directory of the Web, because our website was also part of this directory 🙁
